Dear Coke Talk: On north vs south and east vs west.
I’d rather see him decline it, and the ‘dores get someone more worthy than this “open minded liberal.”.I live in New York City and I’ve been offered a full-tuition scholarship to Vanderbilt University. I am afraid that if I take this opportunity and attend Vanderbilt, I will not like it. I am a liberal and I believe most Southerners are conservatives. I just don’t want to…
Dear NYC High Schooler who is worried about going to Vandy (for once, I’m going to be more blunt than coketalk on something):
Are you fucking shitting me? You get a free ride to a top 20 private university and you’re worried about the student body being conservative?
Maybe you’re in a position where you can turn down $40,000+ a year in tuition, I don’t know. For me and the overwhelming majority of the country, that is a fucking godsend. To think about declining it simply on the basis of not fitting in is an incredulous proposition.
Speaking as someone who went straight from New Jersey to southern school that is much more conservative than Vanderbilt, I’m proud as hell that I did it. Did I fit in all the time? No. Did I learn a hell of a lot more about a different part of the country than if I had gone to a school in the north? Yes.
Unless you get a better offer (and you have my sincere respect if you get a full tuition scholarship to a better school than Vandy), take the offer. If you’re really that afraid of sticking out, you can take that opportunity to show that not all northerners look down their noses at the south.
