We watched Don Pasquale.
Anna Netrebko is overrated. She is smoking hot, though. My biggest issue with her is that in her lower range, she’s got her sound/tongue pulled so far back it’s practically humpin’ her uvula. Her top is brilliantly sparkly though. I don’t know how she did that all night long.
The tenor (Matthew Polenzani) was good, and had these piercing steely blue eyes. I think he would be better suited for a more “I’m gonna swoon those pantaloon right off you” role like Tamino, though.
The Don (John del Carlo) himself seemed a waterly, blusterly voice, and I may have been one of the two (or three) people who didn’t think his duet with the doctor (Mariusz Kwiecien) deserved an encore.
The staging was really bad. What the hell were they doing with the sauce pan? Why didn’t they do something different during the scene where the Don told Anna (Sofrina?) not to go out—like, maybe, make that a scene where she’s preparing to go out, and now just walking around the stage? Maybe that’s too cliche, but what we saw was boring anyway, so what’s the harm?
AND: DishNetwork screwed us—and the local theater—by cutting off the last twenty or so minutes of the opera! We didn’t see the end! We don’t know what the garden scene might have been, or the blessing of the marriage, etc!
